Paris – 8th arrondissement

It’s hard to imagine now, but the 8th arrondissement – the emblematic heart of Haussmannian Paris – was once farmland, and until the 19th century the Champs-Elysées were indeed mostly fields used for country strolls. With its world-famous monuments and elegant avenues, its department stores and luxury hotels, the 8th arrondissement is one of the most prestigious parts of Paris.

Luxury and prestige

The 8th arrondissement is packed with attractions that are synonymous with Paris and its eternal appeal, for visitors and locals alike. As well as the legendary Champs-Élysées, running through the arrondissement from the Arc de Triomphe on Place de l’Étoile up to the Place de la Concorde on the banks of the Seine, the 8th is home to the Élysée Palace, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Parc Monceau, Boulevard de Courcelles and the famous Avenue Georges V, Avenue Montaigne and Avenue Marceau. These streets are home to the city’s most exclusive haute couture houses and luxury boutiques, further bolstering the prestige of the 8th arrondissement. The Grand Palais and the Petit Palais, the Palais de la Découverte and the Hôtel de la Marine (Place de la Concorde) are all within easy reach of the Champs-Élysées and number among the city’s most inspiring and impressive monuments. The 8th arrondissement is also home to Saint-Lazare station, the rail hub for Paris’s western suburbs, as well as countless businesses, banks and law firms, giving the district a bustling, lively feel.

Where tourists and locals meet

The great majority of the buildings in the 8th arrondissement date back to the 19th century They include some of the finest examples of Haussmann-era architecture, with harmonious limestone façades lining the avenues and numerous hôtels particuliers of note, including the Hôtel de Marigny (in the street of the same name) and the Musée Jacquemart-André on Boulevard Haussmann. Residents of the 8th arrondissement are understandably proud of their magnificent neighbourhood, from the hustle and bustle of Boulevard Haussmann and the luxury stores of Avenue Montaigne to the quieter, residential streets around the Place de l’Europe, such as Avenue de Messine and Rue de Téhéran. This part of the city is also a great place to go out in the evening. When they pour out of the Théâtre du Rond-Point (on Avenue Franklin Roosevelt), the Théâtre du Marigny (Marigny Square) or top concert hall L’Olympia (Boulevard des Capucines), locals and visitors are spoilt for choice with all the lively bars and cafés which line the ‘Champs’ and Avenue Georges V.
Prestigious, luxurious, lively: the charms of the 8th arrondissement are impossible to resist. The quintessential embodiment of Paris, the ‘City of Light’, this district is more spectacular than ever over the festive period, with every street and shop window decked out in beautiful lights.
